I've come up with some more information about Leopold Bernard   http://docs.google.com/View?docid=dfg2hmx7_108gj6wxpcf

He died in 1867, but his company made barrels until 1890, which were very highly regarded throughout Europe and even in Russia. The Bernard pattern was also very popular, and made everywhere -but not England. The Ferdinand Drissen (a Liege gun maker) 1897-98 Price List shows Heuse-Lemoine Bernard I and II, and 4 additional Bernard patterns. There were also several other 'Bernard' companies in Liege.

I am of the opinion that any barrel made by the Leopold Bernard company of Paris would have his trademark on the barrel flats

I haven't totally lost it, but readily admit that I can see 'totally lost it' on the horizon :?
Was researching Leopold Bernard, Rene Leclerc, and the origin of the non-crolle (and likely French) patterns of Toncin/Thonin/Chonin/Remington "Ohonon 6 S.T." and found a possible connection (through the Portuguese) to Japanese matchlock arquebus

I have a CH SN 92373 marked "BERNARD STEEL" on the top rib but only a large capital "B" on the barrel flats (under the right barrel)". Is this an anomaly?

Best Regards, George

Drew, we've placed the call. They should be arriving very soon. It would go a lot better for you if you didn't try to resist them. That nice white jacket is really very stylish and quite in vogue for the season and the fact that the sleeves buckle together behind you is only to prevent you from biting your nails in nervous anticipation while the throngs wildly cheer as your motorcade with lights flashing hurries you off to your new digs . . . ;)

Drew, I know the feeling. I had been on the look out for a nice SxS with something a little different in the way of damascus. At the Southern there was a nice Smith with chain damascus but I didn't buy it because the only guns I shoot are Parkers or Remingtons [ don't ask me why- maybe my budget doesn't allow more and I think those two are the best]. I finally found a 1894 C grade Remington with a " Etoile damascus" pattern. The whole gun looks too nice not to be refinished- the barrels look perfect. Too bad it wasn't a Parker, but then I wouldn't have been able to afford it. All I know is that I'm very proud at this time to be the " caretaker " of it and show off those barrels. Paul
