I picked up a Parker under lifter in March. Reading all the information I can get it was built in 1877.
It doesn't have a shield on the stock. Was there a year that Parker started putting the shield on?
Have they always used one and mine is just missing one?

Is there a hole in the stock where one was located? If not, then it probably never had one.

This is an interesting question. Some Parkers have no shields; some Parkers have wrist shields, some Parkers have toe shields. Wrist shields are rarely engraved; toe shields are usually engraved. Only occassionally does the shield appear in the order.
I have T(0) grade guns with shields, and CH guns without shields; there does not seem to be reason here.
Inletting a shield was a significant operation; what was the signal to the gun works to inlet a shield?

Possibly, because most Parkers had a shield or oval, a search for an order to omit the shield would be easier to find if some serial numbers could be provided by their owners for Parkers without a shield.

48223 was a 16 gauge T1 hammer gun on an 0 frame that did not have a shield on what I believe to be the original stock.

There is no hole in the stock. It is a "TO" grade gun. The stock appears to be original to the gun.
